Lake Placid IronMan – A Blast
Ham Radio at it greatest!
I participated in the Lake Placid IronMan Ham Comm Team Sunday July 23rd for the first time. What a blast! A “small” team of very busy hams provided EMS comms for the event. Hams in each ambulance and at every Aid Station provided a true back bone communication between numerous ambulances and the EMS coordinator at HQ. A almost record low transport count (22) made it an “easy” day.
I was located at Bike Aid 5 just north of Whiteface Ski Area. 75 (estimated) volunteers put on a great aid-stop for the racers. Music, cheers and hoopla. A blast!
This year we supported the event with 2 APRS I-Gates located at AID 2 and 5. This increased the outfield APRS coverage to near continuous. More about this under Project APRS.
It was refreshing to see ham-radio at its best and not over-run by every state agency who have received a grant for communication equipment.
Kudos to all!
